5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Southern Puerto Rico
5.5-magnitude earthquake hits near southern Puerto Rico on Saturday. The earthquake caused damage to
the town of Ponce and other southern towns on Saturday morning.
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit
nearby southern Puerto Rico on Saturday, shaking many of their beds on an
island where several residents were already in shelters from recent quakes
earlier this year. There have been no confirmed signs of losses.
The U.S. Geological Survey
recorded that the earthquake impacted just off the coast of Tallaboa, Peñuelas,
and was felt in neighboring towns — including Guánica and Guayanilla, where
hundreds of homes were damaged by an earthquake in early January that killed
one person and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Damage reports were still
trickling quickly on Saturday morning, with at least one second-story balcony
crashing in Ponce's southern area, urban spokesperson Inés Rivera said.
Meanwhile, cracks have been identified in Guayanilla's houses.
